Bonjour fashion lovers,
and so, Donatella Versace has decided to step down as the creative director of the fashion house that bears her name. An announcement that feels like a monumental shift, a page turning in the history of fashion. Because Donatella is not just a designer: she is an icon, a symbol of power, audacity, and sensuality. She is the woman who turned her brother Gianni’s dream into a modern empire, one that has withstood the test of time and fleeting trends.
Since 1997, after Gianni’s tragic passing, Donatella has led the brand with determination and vision. She has carried forward Versace’s DNA with her signature touch: gold, baroque, sensuality, calculated excess, and absolute glamour. She has dressed the most powerful and desired women on the planet, sculpting an aesthetic so recognizable that you could spot it from miles away. She created unforgettable moments, like the iconic jungle dress worn by Jennifer Lopez at the 2000 Grammys, which literally led to the creation of Google Images.

And yet, every reign has its cycle. Starting April 1, 2025, Donatella will become Chief Brand Ambassador of the house, taking on a more institutional and less operational role. The creative baton is being passed to Dario Vitale, a powerhouse from Miu Miu, a designer who has proven his ability to interpret contemporary fashion with intelligence and irony. The inevitable question is: will he be able to keep Versace’s flame alive without betraying its legacy? Only time (and runway shows) will tell.
I lived through the golden era of Versace, the era of supermodels who didn’t just walk the runway—they owned it, turning it into a stage of pure magic. A time when fashion was synonymous with spectacle, charisma, and an absolute dream. This change marks an ugly, ugly end for those of us who grew up in that world. Am I being too nostalgic? Maybe, but it needs to be said. Because that era of fashion, that era of Versace, was an entire universe, a vision that cannot be replicated.
Donatella is stepping down, but her spirit will remain embedded in every stitch, every golden Medusa, every dress that screams power and seduction. And we, now orphaned of this golden age, can do nothing but bow and say thank you. Thank you, Donatella, for making us dream. For turning fashion into a weapon, a statement, an act of rebellion and luxury.
The end of an era? Perhaps. But Donatella’s legend is destined to shine forever.
xoxo
