Adidas, Israel, and Bella Hadid: A Fashion Controversy

Bonjour fashion lovers.

Adidas found itself in the midst of a controversy surrounding its decision to feature Palestinian-American supermodel Bella Hadid in an advertising campaign for a retro sneaker inspired by the 1972 Munich Olympics. The campaign sparked outrage from Israeli officials and some members of the public, who criticized the choice of Hadid, who has been vocal in her support for Palestinian rights and an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Bella Hadid, whose father is Palestinian, has been a vocal critic of Israel's policies towards the Palestinians. In 2021, she shared posts on social media expressing her support for the Palestinians during the Gaza conflict. She has also spoken out against the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

The Adidas campaign featured Hadid wearing a pair of the brand's Samba sneakers, which were first introduced in 1972. The campaign did not explicitly mention the Munich Olympics, but the sneakers were released in the same year as the games, and the campaign imagery was seen by some as evoking the spirit of the Olympics.

The campaign drew immediate criticism from Israeli officials, who accused Adidas of being insensitive to the victims of the Munich Olympics attack. The attack, carried out by Palestinian terrorists, resulted in the deaths of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches.

Adidas initially defended the campaign, saying that it was not intended to be offensive. However, in the face of mounting criticism, the company decided to remove Hadid from the campaign. Adidas also issued a statement apologizing for any offense caused.

The controversy surrounding the Adidas campaign has had a number of repercussions. Hadid has been praised by some for her willingness to speak out about Palestinian rights, but she has also been criticized by others for her views. Adidas has been accused of being hypocritical and of pandering to political pressure.

The controversy has also raised broader questions about the role of fashion brands in politics. Should brands be expected to take a stand on controversial issues? If so, how can they do so in a way that is both respectful and responsible?
